Business Boss: Meet Teresa Walker!

She's "apple-solutely" an incredible teacher!

By Kristin Fouts July 11, 2023

Questions and answers (and inspiration!) with Teresa Walker of the Apple House Preschool Cooperative in Avon. Teresa is deeply involved in the success and impact of this unique school, which you'll be learning more about in the weeks to come.

1. What (or who) inspired you to be involved in this business?

I became the teacher at Apple House through pure kismet! I am a former school parent, board member and have three graduates of my own! After finding the perfect mixture of play, hands on learning and the opportunity to be part of the classroom we knew Apple House was a very special place. When the teaching position became available it was truly a dream come true for me. Little kids are my jam!

Apple House recently celebrated their 40th anniversary and was born out of a need to secure a preschool where play comes first, parents are largely involved, and a community is created full of bonds that go far beyond the classroom and the preschool years alone.

2. What do you love most about the work you do?

It is fun and new every day! We find the spark of education. When you teach a child to LOVE learning first, the rest happens naturally. I treat every day like a possibility for magic. I love watching students get excited about connections, new ideas, the ability to think outside the box, engaging in risky play, mastering friendship skills and all the hugs are great too ;)

3. What do you do to take care of yourself, and how do you make/find time to do it?

Apple House is full of singing, dancing and exploring so sometimes all I need to do to take care of myself after a day of work is find the quiet and calm. I do a lot of reading and love hikes and traveling with my family.

5. What can we readers do to support you and/or Apple House?

Come see what the Apple House community is all about at one of our summer park play dates where you can meet other students and parents: July 11th at Arbuckle Park from 9-11am, and July 20th at Washington Township Splash Pad from 2-3:30pm.  Schedule a tour to see our space and/or the best option: enroll for our next school year!  You can find more information on our website applehousepreschool.com or our Facebook page Apple House Cooperative Preschool.

6. What is your favorite spot to visit around Hendricks County?

There are SO many great things about Hendricks County! All of our parks are each unique and have so much to offer- I love spending an afternoon on the trails at Washington Township or visiting Jack and Diane at Pecar with my kiddos. But my favorite place just might be brunching at The Bread Basket!
