Kids Create: DIY Harmonica

Step-by-step instructions for a quick and fun craft!

By Kristin Fouts March 22, 2023

My 8-year-old LOVES to be creative and make things. His smart little brain comes up with the most amazing things, like a miniature golf course made from a few Amazon boxes, duct tape and plastic cups.

While he probably could have come up with this particular project on his own, he actually made it at a recent Cub Scout meeting.  I had him re-create the process so I could share it with you! It's easy and takes just a few craft supplies you likely already have at home.

STEP 1: Gather materials:
  • Three medium rubber bands
  • Two one-inch wide wooden popsicle sticks
  • One sheet of paper
  • Tape

STEP 2: Cut two (2) strips out of the paper, approximately one-inch wide by three inches long, and tape closed (shown by blue tape in pictures).

STEP 3: Using one popsicle stick and one rubber band, stretch the rubber band lengthwise around the stick.

STEP 4: Slide one paper band on each end of the same stick, about one inch in.

STEP 5: Stack the two popsicle sticks so the banded stick is on top.

STEP 6: Take the two remaining rubber bands and twist one tightly around each end of the stacked sticks, not touching the paper band.

FINAL STEP: Blow through the middle portion of the harmonica to produce a fun buzzing sound!
