8 Spring Break STAY-cation Ideas

Family-friendly fun while school's out!

By Kristin Fouts March 23, 2022

So you want to do something fun with your family during Spring Break but gas prices, work, or other restrictions are keeping you close to home? There's plenty of fun still to be had! Consider these options and customize them for your family!

  1. Take a ride or hike on a local bike trailPack a picnic; both the B&O and Vandalia Trails have places to stop to take in views and a snack.
  2. Explore your creativity. Pick up some paints and canvases, clay, crayons, foam and other art supplies at your local dollar store and practice a variety of techniques! Check out classes and special workshops at Children's Art Classes (Brownsburg), Brightly Art Studio (Brownsburg), UPaint Pottery Studio (Plainfield), and The Tie Dye Lab (Avon) to stretch your imagination.
  3. Plan a movie marathon. Great for days with less-than-great weather, put some pillows, cushions and blankets on the floor, and prepare a fun menu with popcorn, nachos, candy, etc. Invite some friends over, and let each person pick a favorite movie to suit everyone's interests!
  4. Try new foods. Explore new-to-you local restaurants. Expand your kids' palates with international foods, or unique takes on classics.
  5. Make a seek-and-find game of going out! Create a list of fairly random sites and sights around your local area- unique buildings, murals, animal farms, etc. Give each child a copy (little ones will need some help, of course) and you've got a fun scavenger hunt!
  6. Do you live in subdivision or neighborhood with lots of kids? Set a date with other parents for a mass sidewalk drawing contest or show! Chalk is fairly inexpensive, and kids young and old love to doodle.
  7. Give your kids a "Yes Day"! Let your kids schedule the day and make most major decisions... with rules. Everything should be safe, and feel free to set a budget. Do they want ice cream for breakfast? Sure! [It's just one day.] Maybe they want to go to the zoo, play video games, make a fun meal together, etc. They'll learn a lot about each other, their community, and responsibility along the way!
  8. Make a family time capsule. These past two years sure have been unique, and I'm sure they've changed the way your family operates in small or big ways, just like mine. Capture your 2022 reality by having each family member contribute something small-- a picture, toy, letter, etc.-- to put in a tightly-sealed container. Bury it or store it away somewhere to be re-opened in several years.
