Questions and answers (and inspiration!) with Marsha Quarles, hard-working and creative co-owner of Marsha's Specialty Desserts and Tierney's Catering, located at 10834 E. US Hwy 36 in Avon, across from Chick-fil-A. They offer meal catering as well as beautiful custom desserts!

1. What (or who) inspired you to start your business?
My grandfather. He was a firm believer in family being close and working together. We are a family owned business... my mom, aunt, sister, husband, son, and I. We are very blessed and fortunate to have such a strong support system.
2. What do you love most about the work you do?
The happiness and joy on our customers faces when they see their treats. Makes my entire day. I also love the challenge of a complicated cake. It is hard work to figure it out, but so thrilling when it all comes together in the end.
3. What advice do you have for others wanting to start a business?
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. You have to have discipline, determination, thick skin, and belief in your goods and services. There is no such thing as 9-5 when you own your own business. Make sure you absolutely LOVE what you do. Be prepared for lots of hard work; success may not come right away. Don't give up... keep fighting for your dream. It will eventually pay off.
4. What do you do to take care of yourself, and how do you make/find time to do it?
I absolutely love to travel. COVID has made that tough, but I hope to go to Hawaii when things are better. Celebrations are always happening, so taking time off can be tough. But we make a way. It is critically important to find something that you love to do that is not related to your field of work. Being rejuvenated and refreshed will keep new ideas flowing, as well as keep you energized and excited about your business.

6. Favorite spot to go around Hendricks County?
Avon Wedding Barn & Washington Township Pavilion. We do a lot of weddings (my favorite) and those are both beautiful venues.
