MKH Library Tour: Avon-Washington Township Public Library

Meet your local libraries!

By Kristin Fouts December 31, 2021

The Avon-Washington Township Public Library celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2020, and continues to be "visible, valuable, and vital" to surrounding communities. The building is situated on the crest of a small hill on IN-267 just north of Rockville Road. Renovated in 2015 and continuously improved through generous donations, the Avon library offers great resources for patrons of all ages.

Address: 498 N. Avon Ave, Avon

Hours: Sunday 2-5pm, Monday-Thursday 9am-8pm, Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday 9am-4pm

Did you know? Several Hendricks County libraries support reciprocal borrowing, which means  most residents can get a free library card and borrow items from these libraries: Avon-Washington Township, Brownsburg, Clayton-Liberty Township, Coatesville-Clay Township, and Danville. Residents in Pittsboro and Lizton need to purchase a library membership in order to participate. The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library is part of the Evergreen network, connecting it with more than 100 other libraries across the state for sharing privileges. Those outside of Plainfield who wish to check out books and resources must purchase a Public Library Access Card (PLAC)  at the library's front desk.

The kids zone encompasses most of the east end of the library. With floor-to-ceiling windows on the east wall, this area is full of light and is very easy to navigate. Some of their play areas have returned after COVID restrictions were lifted (like the great little playhouse, donated by the Library Guild), but others remain closed, including the Lego wall (donated by Kiwanis) and puzzle desks (donated by the Rotary). In-person story times are also returning in September, but they fill up quickly so watch this calendar closely!

A special teen area greets you at the front entrance, and is the result of a braintrust of library staff and a teen advisory group. A sleek lounge space is often used for playing games and socializing.

You'll notice several racks of books for sale in the main lobby; these are ongoing sales, but on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, some books are discounted to $0.50-$1.00. [These are great for helping teachers stock up their classrooms!] Patrons can also now check out board games for a two-week period; explore new-to-you games with your family!

For those looking for a quiet space to work or read, the west end of the library is perfect. A beautiful indoor "porch" is filled with natural light and comfortable seating. A separate "quiet room" is next door and maintains strict noise rules. If you like to read and relax outdoors, a brand-new Outdoor Reading Center will open soon, with new furniture, a raised deck and a pergola for shade. Meeting rooms are also available in the lower level of the library for community use.

Finally, the Huron Heritage Room celebrates local history and is accessible upon appointment only. Historian Susan Truax is available to help with genealogy projects, searching Indiana digital archives, and preserving local stories and photos.

Mark your calendars for the Celebrating Avon heritage festival on September 18, and ArtScape on March 12, 2022, which celebrates local artists and music!
