4 Creeks in Hendricks County for Kids to Splash In!

Check out these five creek stompin' spots where your kids can cool off.

By Krista Hershey July 16, 2020

We are lucky to have so many great creeks locally where kids can splash and play -- and you can feel good about social distancing.

Here are five of my family's favorite creeks in the Hendricks County area to visit. Don't see your family's favorite creek here? Drop me a note at kristah@macaronikid.com and I'll add it to our list!

Put on a swimsuit, bring shoes good for creek walking, and don't forget snacks and sunscreen before heading out to any of these Hendricks County creeks! And remember, always watch your kids in water — no matter how shallow it is!

1. White Lick Creek at Hummel Park, Plainfield

White Lick Creek in Hummel Park offers a wide beach area by the long wooden bridge with lots of rocks for skipping and building. Several small paths from the walking trails lead down to different parts of the creek banks, which make it an awesome place to explore and play in your own space. Park in the east or west parking lot. Restrooms located close to parking lots.

Our family tip: rinse off in the Splash Pad before you leave!

2. West Fork White Lick Creek at Ellis Park and Blanton Woods

The creek in Ellis Park offers a wide creek bed perfect for searching for creek critters and skipping rocks. Park in Ellis Park and find your way to the water down from the swinging bridge for the best place to go creek stomping'. Restrooms available in the park.

Hidden creek-side spots are waiting to be discovered by families while hiking the trails in Blanton Woods, less than a mile north of Ellis park. Park in the Blanton Woods parking lot off of North County Road 50 East.

3. Small Creek at Burnett Woods, Avon

Burnett Woods is a nature preserve with a small creek that is perfect for little ones to splash in. Hike a small trail to reach the babbling creek under a small bridge. The trails here can get pretty muddy depending on rain in the last few days before you go, so wear your mud clothes and rain boots. Park at the Light & Life Church parking lot and walk across the grass to the trail entrance in the woods by 100 South.

4. Big Walnut Creek at McCloud Nature Park, North Salem

Big Walnut Creek is a great place to kayak, canoe, fish, wade, or just splash around! View lots of nature and get awesome photos with the over 100-year-old iron truss bridge that towers over the water. Park near the nature center or the parking lot just past it down the hill. Walk a short distance down a trail to one of the creek spots. Restroom located at the Nature Center.

Our family tip: Walk on the bridge and throw twigs into the water to play "pooh sticks."
