Fun Salt Dough Valentines Your Kids Will Love to Make

By Krista Hershey February 6, 2020

We're getting ready for Valentine's Day! This was my first time making salt dough ornaments. It was so much fun! (even though I had to keep convincing the kids that they were not cookies!)

I thought I would give my letter stamps a try in the dough. While I liked how they looked in the dough, the way the letters looked after baking and painting was unpredictable. I'm not sure I would use the stamps again. We stamped the kids' names, "love," and "xoxo."

Here's how to make your own salt dough valentines:

24 small Valentine ornaments

Ingredients:

  • 8 cups flour
  • 2 cup salt
  • 3 cups water
  • small heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • straw
  • letters or shape stamp, optional
  • acrylic paint

Directions:

  1. Combine ingredients. Knead dough for 15 to 20 minutes.
tip: use a stand-up mixer to avoid having to knead so long!

  2. Roll dough and cut out heart shapes with cookie cutters.

  3. Punch a small hole at the tops if you want to be able to hang them.

  4. Bake at 300ºF about 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden. Thicker valentines will take a little longer to bake. They may not feel hard right away, but will harden as they cool.
tip: make sure to use parchment paper on cookie sheet or spray cookie sheet with nonstick cooking spray to avoid stickiness.
  5. If desired, stamp letters or shapes.

  6. Paint and decorate!
