German Pancake - Winter Breakfast Recipe

By KH January 23, 2020

A cold morning in winter is the best time to make and share a German pancake with the family. In case you're not familiar with the German pancake: we are not talking about the potato pancake, but the perfectly warm, salty-and-sweet breakfast treat.

Also called a dutch baby, the German pancake is almost like it's American classic breakfast cousins-- the waffle and the regular pancake--as it's made out of almost the same stuff: eggs, milk, and flour. Except the German pancake batter gets stirred up, dolloped with butter, and put in the oven to bake. This step takes up so much less time than pouring, waiting during bake-time, and serving individual waffles and regular pancakes one at a time.

Another fun surprise hides in the German pancake. When it's almost done baking, turn on the oven light and call the littles over to see what has happened. The flat, boring batter will have grown into giant rolling hills with streams of melted butter. It is eye-widening and mouth-watering!

Cut it into slices. Shake on lots of powdered sugar. Add maple syrup or fruit preserves if you'd like!
