The Magic of Color-Dying Flowers

By Krista Hershey August 29, 2019

My mom did a lot of crafts and activities with me when I was a kid. One thing she taught me (I thought it was magical) was how to color-dye queen anne's lace flowers. One summer, my friend Lindsay and I made a bunch of blue ones and then rode around on our bikes trying to sell them to the neighbors. One really nice lady actually bought one!

I was pretty excited to try it out with my own kids when we found some little queen anne's lace on a walk in the park.

First thing, go for a walk or bike ride with your kids and pick some flowers! Find queen anne's lace wherever wild flowers grow. You could try another white flower, or several different types and help your kids observe the differences. Note which color came through best. Ask them how they think it worked.

If you've never done this before, it's really simple.

Here's how:

  1. Find and pick flowers.

  2. Put a couple drops of food coloring and water in small cups or vases.

  3. Cut the tips of the stems off of your flowers.

  4. Place them in the water.

  5. Wait about 24 hours.
