DIY Paint Scrape Art

By Krista Hershey August 7, 2019

"Mommy, can we do a craft?" I hear this question on a daily basis from my littlest Macaroni kid. She likes doing projects that are fun, spending one-on-one time with me, and creating something in the process. When I look for kid-friendly art and crafts, I look for ideas that aren't super time-consuming, that can't get too messy, and that can turn out looking pretty cool.

This is one of those projects!

This activity included just a few supplies we already had on hand. It took just a few minutes to set up. And it had minimal clean up. The results were cool enough to display for a long time or even to make another craft with--a bonus art project for another day!

Here's what we used:
  • paints (acrylic or plain craft paint)

  • a used gift card

  • cardstock or index cards

  • baby wipes

  • newspaper, cardboard, or plastic tablecloth to protect your work surface

  • apron for your child to wear

  • scotch tape (optional)

Directions:
  1. Prepare the work area. Get out all the supplies you'll be using. Lay down newspaper or whatever you are using to protect your work surface. Put on the apron. Lay out the card stock and secure with a piece of tape if you want to (we held onto it with our fingers.)

  2. Pour a few drops of paint on one end of the card stock. Alternate colors for stripes.

  3. Steadily drag the used gift card across the card stock until you reach the other end. Here you can improvise. Drag the card along straight or make up and down curved movements to make waves.

  4. Quickly wipe card, fingers, and surface covering with baby wipe.

  5. Set somewhere safe to dry. You can leave it like this, decorate with letter stickers, or just place it in a frame.

  6. Voila! Super fun art that looks cool enough to display!
