8 Cool Things about the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

By Krista Hershey July 18, 2019

Grab some astronaut ice cream and make yourself a pitcher of Tang. Because this Saturday, July 20, 2019, we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of landing on the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission July 20,1969.

8 Cool Things You (And Your Kids) Should Know about the Apollo 11 Moon Landing:

  1. Neil Armstrong graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana!

  2. Michael Collins was there, too! Three men went on the Apollo 11 Mission: Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. Although Collins did not get to experience stepping on the Moon's surface, the mission would not have been possible without him.

  3. The crew originally wanted to call their vessels Charlie Brown and Snoopy. Snowcone and Haystack became the working names, but Columbia and Eagle were decided upon as the final choices.

  4. Armstrong carried with him a piece of wood from an airplane that belonged to the Wright brothers.

  5. The astronauts left pictures of human beings and the recordings of many languages on the surface of the moon.

  6. They also left a special American flag that was designed with an additional horizontal pole for support to make it appear to be flying, since the moon is airless.

  7. Aldrin & Armstrong were so excited after walking on the moon that they refused their scheduled nap that day.

  8. The men were quarantined for 21 days After landing in a trailer, just in case they contracted some kind of moon disease.
