Corn on the Cob with Kids

(Insert Corny Joke Here.)

By Krista Hershey July 18, 2019

There is a stretch of road we often drive that has corn fields on both sides. From the time our littlest could speak and recognize things out the window, she could see when the corn was growing. Out from nowhere, she will still yell, "Big Corn!" startling everyone in the car.

The corn stalks DO get really big. Have you ever gotten out of the car to take a picture with it? Are you really a Hoosier if you haven't? As Indiana natives, we take pride in our corn because it seems to be everywhere you drive in this state.

We had some tender, juicy, fresh local sweet corn with dinner the other day. There's nothing like it! It tastes like summer!

Tips for preparing and eating corn on the cob with your kids:

  1. Buy local. The fresher, the better! Find a stand on the side of the road or visit your nearby Farmers Markets.

  2. Buy yourself a set of corn holders. They come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. It's the best thing for little hands learning to eat on the cob.

  3. Try it off the cob sometimes, too. Seems like we always have in our household: A.) A toddler who isn't big enough to chomp the corn off the cob yet. B.) A 6-10 year old with a loose tooth. or C:) A kid in braces. You can cut it with a sharp knife or purchase a special kitchen gadget specifically  made for this.

  4. Own your buttering method. Use the traditional butter knife and butter dish, cut the end off of a new stick of butter, or set all the corn in a baking dish filled with melted butter at the bottom. I worked at a fruit market in high school, and there I learned to generously butter a piece of bread, cup it in your hand, and smother it all over the cob. (This method allows for you to eat a butter bread as a side bonus!) However you prefer to butter it, make it your own, and don't forget a little salt.

Enjoy sweet corn season, fellow corny Hoosiers!
