As our family plans for summer, I created a camp list for our daughter to choose from and she put The STEM Connection right on top. We didn’t have a chance to get to number 2 or 3, because all of a sudden her mind was flooded with memories from last year: working on STEM projects with ‘the big kids’, exploring Eagle Creek for aquatic life, seeing an eagle’s nest and snake skin on hikes, catching butterflies to investigate, tending to the garden and so much more.
For her, these activities are just plain fun; but I know they are helping shape who she is. She is learning how all life is connected, how to collaborate in groups of all ages, and developing important STEM skills that will help prepare her future.
What is truly magical about this camp? Well there are 2 things: the space and the staff. The Stem Connection is located in the Traders Point Rural Historic District and hosts 30 acres of outdoor learning space with hiking trails, deciduous forest and Eagle Creek. There is also an indoor learning space for when inclement weather is in the forecast.
For many camps, you don’t know how amazing (or not) that it is until you know the staff. For the last year, I have gotten to know this staff through summer camp and their STEM @ Night programs and can attest they are caring, passionate, and knowledgeable about working with and for kids. I truly can’t say enough about how they help my child feel emotionally and physically safe while challenging her to grow through hands-on, minds-on, feet-on-the ground STEM education.
